November 12 – 15, 2021 will go down in this writer’s mind as the dates when he wished he’d built an ark! Many people are in “the same boat” according to the many news sources, mainstream and local, reporting stranded people and vehicles, plumbers run off their feet with busyness, restoration companies that can only try to make it by “sometime tomorrow,” double checks on homeowner insurance, and so on. Sadly, part of the memory may be evacuation, displacement, and possible reliance on neighbours or friends for shelter and food.
Who knew last Thursday that come Monday, many of us would be seeking help from people everyone else was seeking help from? And that because of that, no help would be available?
If you live in a multi-family building, it’s possible the rain exposed the water pathways existing somewhere in the structure, and that you now know about them because they’re now visible. If such pathways exist, the rain at the volume we’ve seen will find them. If the water hasn’t made its way into your line of sight, then this is still a good time to see if they exist before the next storm hits and exposes those weaknesses into your living space.
For decades we’ve worked at reducing multi-units infrastructure weak spots. Now we’re here, after the storm, advising that the time could be well spent seeking out where those weak spots are hiding by simply looking for them via Thermal Imaging photography. If it’s wet behind those walls right now, the time is right to find out where!
When we find infrastructure issues, we develop long term plans to make sure these weaknesses don’t cause you grief. Good planning is the foundation of solid risk management.
